Kretinga

The town is situated in the western part of the country, only 21 km from the port of Klaipėda and 12 km from the airport and the resort town - Palanga.

Kretinga’s name was first mentioned in the letter by bishop Kuršas in 1253. The settlement started to develop only at the beginning of the 17 th century when Jan Karol Chodkiewicz built a church and Franciscan Monastery and when the settlement was granted the urban rights.

Tourist and visitors are encouraged to visit the following places of interest in Kretinga region: The Museum and winter garden, the M. Valančiaus Memorial Museum, the Orvydai Museum of the Strange and Unusual, and the monastery and church complex.

Palanga

Palanga is a beach resort by the Baltic Sea. The town is stretched along the sea coast, its streets and houses alternate with parks and pine forest. The coastline, extending for ever 10 kilometers, makes one huge sandy beach. The Palanga Botanical Park, designed for Count Tyszkiewicz, contains over 300 plant species and is considered to be one of Lithuania’s most beautiful and richest botanical gardens.

Another attraction of the park is the Tyszkiewicz Manor House with nowadays houses the Amber Museum. Amber, known as Lithuanian gold, can still be found on the shore of the Baltic Sea. The amber Museum has a unique collection of amber, which presents its 40 million years’ story.

Curonian spit

Neringa is a narrow spit of land running from Klajpeda to nearly as far as Kaliningrad (former Konigsberg).

Nowadays Neringa is one of most popular and prestigious recreation areas in Lithuania, its unique nature with sand dunes, pine forests and golden beaches attracting thousands of holiday-makers every year.

Neringa is separated from the mainland Lithuania by Curonian Lagoon, which is accessible from the mainland by ferry only as there is no bridge.

The most famous resort villages in Neringa are Nida, Preila, Pervalka and Juodkrante.
