Vilnius – the capital and the largest city of Lithuania. It is situated at the confluence of the rivers Vilnele and Neris. Vilnius was geographical and cultural centre of Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The city was founded in 1323. Throughout a couple of centuries it became a constantly growing and developing city. The architecture of Vilnius is very diverse.. The Old Town – the historical centre of Vilnius is one of the largest in Europe. There are more than 40 churches to visit . Although Vilnius is often called a baroque city, here you will find some buildings of Gothic, Renaissance and other styles. Because of its uniqueness, the Old Town of Vilnius was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994.

The places worth seeing are :

• Gediminas Castle – there are some fragments of the old castle there. There is a good observation point at the top of the tower, where you could admire the view of Vilnius Old Town.
• The Cathedral Square and neoclassical Vilnius Cathedral, standing at the foot of Gediminas hill. It is most lively and important square in the city, where different gatherings of the residents and guests of Vilnius take place for official, religious and public events, attractions and large concerts.

Lithuanian King Mindaugas, built the original cathedral in 1251, after his conversion to Christianity. The Cathedral was rebuilt and reconstructed for many times.

• Pilies Street – is one of the main streets in the Old Town of Vilnius.
• St. Ann’s church
• St. Francis and Bernardine church
• Sts. Peter and Paul’s church
• Three Crosses on the Cross Hill.
• Vilnius University is one of the oldest Universities in Eastern Europe and the largest University in Lithuania.
• Gate of Dawn, was built between 1502 and 1522 as a part of defensive fortifications for the city of Vilnius. The Chapel in the Gate of Dawn contains a renewed miraculous icon of The Blessed Virgin Mary Mother of Mercy.
